Vibrant and Welcoming
BART NEEDS TO BE
Let's activate BART stations and plazas with events and retail to bring it into the 21st century
Concerns about safety are a significant barrier to bringing riders back to BART, and plazas and stations are the front doors to the system. While BART has made progress in making riders feel safer on board with more ambassadors and shorter trains, creating a more welcoming and inviting environment at BART plazas and stations is critical to bring people back to the system.
Creating tianguis, markets, or mercantiles at 16th Street in partnership with the American Indian Cultural District, and at 24th Street in partnership with Calle 24 would create benefits for the community and for BART.
Partnering with Cultural Districts and community-serving nonprofits to bring event programming and activations to BART plazas is another priority. Events, food purveyors, retail, and performance programming are all achievable, and activating stations for public uses will not only make them feel more vibrant and welcoming, but offer new amenities for riders, and bring in revenue for BART.
